BPC-157 (Body Protective Compound 157) emerged from Croatian gastroenterology research in the 1990s, when Dr. Predrag Sikiric and colleagues at the University of Zagreb isolated a 15-amino-acid sequence from a protective protein found in human gastric juice — originally studied for its role in shielding the stomach lining, a line of inquiry that expanded into broader tissue-repair research. What it is: BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val), stable in both acidic and basic environments. This stability has made it a subject of interest for both oral and injectable delivery. Proposed Mechanisms & Research Findings: Preclinical studies — conducted exclusively in cell cultures and rodent models — suggest BPC-157 may promote tissue repair via upregulation of (angiogenesis), increased expression in tendon fibroblasts, and modulation of nitric oxide signaling. Animal studies report accelerated healing of tendons, muscles, ligaments, and gastric mucosa. None of these findings have been confirmed in controlled human clinical trials. Regulatory & Safety Status: BPC-157 is not approved for human use by the FDA, Health Canada, or any major regulatory authority.
